Sybil’s Kids

Child sponsorship

The website and family portal for Sybil’s Kids, a ministry serving children in Chokwe, Mozambique. Sponsors get a private page for their child with a yearly update.

In 1990 Sybil Baloy moved from South Africa to Mozambique and started with one ball, one Bible story and a few children. Today there are more than 20 kids clubs. The site tells that story and connects American families with children through local churches.

Behind the public site is a private family portal and an admin suite for the team: children, sponsors, yearly updates, an inquiry inbox, giving records and trip tools. A native iPhone app handles field work on trips, where the signal comes and goes.

Field notes

  1. One update per child per year, enforced in the database, so the cadence stays calm
  2. Child photos are private by default: logged access, signed links, location data stripped and a watermark added
  3. The trip app works offline and syncs without overwriting someone else’s changes
  4. More than 430 backend tests run on every change
